Years ago, I had girlfriends that would attempt to increase their family's income, by becoming sales representatives for companies that manufactured spices, essential oils, cookware, Tupperware, jewelry, clothing, candles and their accompanying accessories, and I will list one more focal item that I recall, purses. Designers are a dime a dozen, and brilliant marketers of products discovered, that if they could get sellable items into homes, chances were pretty high, that some would remain there, after being woman handled, fawned over, and adored, while other women, especially the saleswoman, encouraged the purchasing of a purse with the words, You deserve it! It looks so good on you, and it is an expensive designer label! I have heard these words asserting themselves in my thoughts: I have to have it. Have you, dear reader, had a similar experience?
Recently I watched a documentary about the debauching of a whole generation in Los Angeles. Rich kids with hundred dollar bills and expensive cars growing up neglected by their parents, left them bereft of belief in anything other than the materials they could get their hands on. Purse parties for their botox-ed and plastic surgery moms were the real deal; paying thousands of dollars for one bag was a badge of honour, and these authentic designer label purses, were treasured, and still are. A truly rich and vain person, would never consider being seen with a low end semi-knockoff bag, like the ones sold in the circles I travelled fifteen or more years ago. I think of the purses these women buy, and I imagine opening one of the bags wide and looking into the emptiness and next, looking them in the eye, and asking: So you paid for nothing? and then grinning widely, and adding, You paid for a purse that emptied your wallet?
The emptying of the wallet, dear reader, is perpetual for spenders like this. The endless circle of tail chasing for more of the same, has them frantic and frazzled. More money, more purses, more botox, more surgeries, more clothes, lipstick, eyeliner, more hair processing and less and less soul. Enslaved to their own carnal cravings, they become carcasses before their time, dead things that have no substance, just like the bags they buy so that they can brag, or show off. Before you start seeing me as envious, I will redirect our focus to the pearl of great price.
Are you, dear reader, willing to empty your wallet, willing to sell all you have, willing to give what you have got, to have the greatest and most priceless, treasure of all? The original Designer does not sell his product door to door, although he stands and knocks, and will enter in when doors are open to him. The One that labels his handcrafted creations, has ticketed each creature that bears his image, as priceless; and lastly, the vessel, the shells you and I travel about in, can be enlivened, when God resides within:
Christ at your door:
Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me
Christ paying the price
Matthew 20:28
Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many
Christ indwelling
Romans 8:9-11
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you
You could, dear reader, be an empty bag of flesh, devoid of substance, while vaguely resembling your creator on the outside. What a sad state of affairs for you, if this is the case. It does not have to be so...
Listen for knocking
Hear his voice
Open the door
He will come in
He will sup with you and;
You will with him
Be ministered to
See him on the cross
Paying your ransom
Paying for your sins
And live, as Christ would have you living, freely, righteously, with his Holy Spirit quickening yours. Jesus is the resurrection and the life; we are dead men walking without him. Dead does not have to be your current or future state: you can be alive in Christ Jesus, now and forever, Amen.
The things of the flesh are fleeting. We get a temporary thrill when we physically get what we think we need or want, but the sense of accomplishment fades quickly, to be replaced by an emptiness that craves more filling. Dear reader, don't empty your wallet for nothing in return; spend your life on what is precious in the sight of the Lord. Give your all to him, and the rewards will send you heavenward.
