Do you have a credo, a statement, dear reader, that you live by, pinned to the cork board in your mind, or perhaps hanging from tiny nails embedded in your drywall? Joshua spoke to the Israelites, the chosen people of promise: he gave them two options, and only two, followed by a public declaration of what he and his family would do. The direction we take after making choices, lead us one way, or another: two, and I repeat, only two options, can be chosen from, and these are highlighted in the scripture below.
Joshua 24:14-15
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Option 1
Fear the LORD
Serve him in sincerity and in truth
Put away the gods your fathers served
Serve the LORD
Option 2
Choose this day whom ye will serve
The gods your fathers served
Or the gods of the Amorites
... but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD
What I left out and will reinsert here: The other side of the flood, and in Egypt.
Let us revisit humanities past together, shall we? God's chosen people had him as their Sovereign, and he spoke through his prophets and shepherds, instructing them in the ways of the LORD; laws and commandments were codified, and given as protective measures when adhered to, to ensure the peoples continuance as a godly nation. Modern man has The Bible to reference, and to lead us in godly ways, but the Israelites had God in their midst, and they, just as most people today are, were rebellious against what is very, very good for them; their disobedience has had short, and clearly long term consequences, of an eternal nature. I believe we are experiencing Ichabod globally, with God having taken his hand off of us, permitting all manner of wickedness, since the masses have clearly chosen, the gods of their fathers, the gods before the flood, and the gods of the land in which they dwell. On this side of the flood, and on this side of the freeing from Egyptian enslavement, God maintained a remnant, after wiping and washing the earth clean, and destroying the wicked that sinned egregiously in his sight; God rescued a people from the heavy hand of Pharaoh in Egypt, and God will redeem his faithful still, that refuse to bow down, serve, and worship, demon gods, or the ones crafted by human hands.
Years ago, God made me the head of my household, and he taught me how to manage all things pertaining to the running and maintaining of a home, and that includes paying for everything that is purchased immediately, and taking out the garbage on time, and of course, everything in between. Our family credo echoes that of the faithful servant of the LORD, Joshua:
... as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD
What we have now to address, dear one, is:
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve
If indeed it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, then you place yourself in the camp of those that are at enmity with the Sovereign, and you, make no mistake, are serving the demon gods of this world, that perhaps your father and mother served, or perhaps, are territorially dominant where you dwell.
Joshua led God's people out of the desert and into the promised land, with a hint of warning of what would happen to them, if they went the way of their rebellious relatives, that in the past, chose abhorrent wickedness, rather than aligning with gods people, that were and are, lovingly and providentially cared for, by the Creator. God takes you and I by the hand and says this way, not that, and yet, so many of us shake free from his gentle grip, only to wander where our fickle and fetish obsessed feet lead.
Is it, in your opinion, evil for you to serve the LORD?
Does it seem evil to you, to have him as your God?
As for me, dear reader, and my house, we will serve the LORD, and I pray, you make this your family credo too.
